Danny, I grow over 100 different crinum here in northeast FL, near Jacksonville, zone 8+ to 9. Some will do OK in your zone, but many will not, probably even with heavy mulch. Do you have any idea what you have (name, description of leaves, blossm, etc.)? Some, like bulbispermum stay green here all winter with temperatures into the low 20's. Others, like Mystery, will lose leaves with a heavy frost. All of the bulbs will overwinter here kept in the ground with the bulb covered(there are some more exotic forms that are more tropical or have special growing requirements). Further north, especially north of zone 8, you need to bury a few inches of the neck too, and mulch on top of that. I know this does not help much. I have lots of good crinum web info, if you will email me (web sites with pictures, bulbs for sale, growing info, etc.) My email is Nestor69@aol.com Nestor White |

Wow...I can't believe I didn't reply to this thread (my apologies). I have 'Ellen Bosanquet' 'Christopher', x powelli alba, and I can't remember the other right off the top of my head. it may be 'Elizabeth Traub'. I'm happy to report that I pulled the straw mulch off the plants and it looks like all of them survived the winter (total leaf loss of course). I do still have the necks above ground level...rather than disturb them, I think I may mound around them with soil to give them some more protection (I don't want to have to mulch them for eternity) I'm hoping to get flowers in a year or two (these were ebay purchases and the bulbs would be about 8-10 inches tall (hard to judge where teh neck starts), hmm, well basically you could just barely (because I did) put the bulb into a trade gallon pot and have any root room at all (was just a holding measure till it got a bit cooler in mid summer)). Any notion how far off from flowering size we have here ? I know they're reputed to grow quite large. I desperately (well relatively) want to accquire a striped form like C scabrum.

Danny, I'm glad your crinum made it through the winter. Here in Jacksonville, FL zone 8B-9, we got down to 19 degrees and all of my 125 different crinum survived except a couple of variegated varieties and one that really needs dry conditions in the winter. I do have several varieties of C. scabrum, and several other "milk & wine" varieties available, if you are interested. You need to try C. bulbispermum and maybe C. Carolina beauty plus a few others that are more cold hardy. |
