I live near Chicago in zone 5 and muscari always send up foliage in September and October. It stays all winter and the bulbs bloom in spring right on schedule. It must be nice to have such good weather, since it is snowing here--ugh! Hope this helps. |

Hi, Many people ask this question. Your Muscaris will bloom in the right season, the growth regulating hormones that keep the flower dormant will be broken down by winter temperatures, like with chilling bulbs for warmer climate zones. For foliage Muscaris don't have this growth regulating hormone, so the leaves will come up before winter with most species. Some don't do this, I haven't figured out why there is this difference. Muscari latifolium for instance never gives leaves in fall, M. armeniacum always. With hard frost the leaves can be killed but don't worry, they will come back in spring. To prevent the leaves coming up too early the bulbs can be stored warm and dry in summer and planted only after Nov. 1st. Enjoy. Martin Philippo |
