Lycoris beginning growth...
Here in zone 6b, my winter growing Lycoris are beginning to push up foliage, so their "season" is now beginning.

Zone 6b - This is a short report on Lycoris with spring foliage emergence:

L. longituba - Emergence began early January. Obvious tip burn has occurred, but foliage growth is presently only 3-4 inches. Hopefully, little negative effect will result.

L. chinensis - Emergence began mid January. Again, we have some tip burn on 2-3 inches of growth.

L. sprengeri - Some sporadic leaf emergence began mid January, but the bulk is only just beginning.

L. caldwellii - Began leaf emergence about the 5th of February.

L. squamigera - Tips are just now peaking out of the soil.

L. sanguinea - Ditto.

For me, this is an exciting time of year, with some of the first heralds of spring beginning to bloom. With my enthusiasm for Lycoris, however, I get just as excited to see leaves simply starting to break the soil surface. Anybody else experience Lycoris activity?

I bought what I suspect is L. squamigera from the local garden club last spring. They said it was "naked ladies" but did not know the scientific name. It sprouted in fall and still has lovely, undamaged foliage. I am babying my L. radiata since it is in a pot and I am worried about hardiness. It, too, has been evergreen all winter, even though I have kept it fairly dry.
