Tony,

Thanks for all the beautiful pictures of gladioli. You have a very nice garden. I noticed to be what looked like Lycoris squamigera in one of the photos, also.

Yes it is. Very Happy They are full of new leaf growth as I write this. I was going to divide them this past winter, but didn't get around to it. Question Can it be done during the summer after all foliage dies back, or is it best to wait again till dormancy after the bloom?

Thanks.

The absolute best time to transplant Lycoris is when the foliage has died back but has not disappeared. At that point, you know exactly where the bulbs are, they have taken in the maximum amount of energy, and are totally prepared for a dormancy of several months.

Their roots go pretty deep, so dig deeply in an effort to save as much of the root structure as possible. Though this makes them harder to replant, if you are not dealing with too many, it's a small price to pay for even faster recovery.

Thanks. I'll probably wait till fall so I won't need to dig so deep. I got 2 bulbs out last fall for a trade, but they backed out, so I put them in pots. The ones in the garden are 8 to 10 inches tall and growing. Smile The 2 in pots are just now shooting up, maybe 2 inches. I'll find a good spot for then later.

Just so you know, Tony, Lycoris do not lose their root system when they go dormant, unlike Narcissus, Tulips, and others. It is the losing of their roots during transplanting that slows their recovery.

And when I recommend "digging deeply", I simply mean to avoid using a hand trowel. Dug reasonably, the bulb will have 3-4" of root still attached.

Thanks for that info. I did not know that about the roots. Now I know to be carefull. I thought they dried up when the tops were finished like most others. Learn something new every day. Smile
