My potted Hippeastrum crosses are forcing foliage, even though still in a relatively dark room. I desperately need to get these into some sunlight, but freeze damage is still a real possibility for us this time of year. |

Finally, I moved the Hippeastrum bulbs outside this week. Some minor burn has occurred only on a few of the more sensitive hybrid leaves. All are adjusting to the sunlight quickly. A handful are now pushing up flower scapes. Since these are my hybrid seedlings, I will be seeing most of them bloom for the first time. |

Spring is Great!! Today I have about 150 different amaryllis in bloom in my yard here in Northeast FL. Fortunately for me, I can keep them in the ground year-round. I have been growing amaryllis for 15 years and have about 250 different, mostly hybrids. Although I have had crinum here in NE FL for about 10 years, I really got "hooked" on them about 5 years ago and have now accumulated 120 different. Crinum are in the amaryllis family of plants which includes many we don't commonly think about. Of course hippeastrum are called amaryllis, but are actually quite different. I am going to post some good web site information for both hippeastrum and crinum. Many of the sites are for commercial sales, but many have good pictures of plants too. Since this is not the main focus for Bulbmeister.com, I hope Kelly will not be upset. I do have some plants available for trade or sale (nestor69@aol.com) and have pictures of these on a site, if you are interested. The Hippeastrum breeding experience has been more "fruitful" this season. Between 15-20 of seedlings I started in spring and summer of 1999 came into bloom this time. I've not done any crossing since 2000, and none of those have bloomed, yet. I anticipate doing a second round of crosses next season. Extremely fun and interesting (if you have the patience). |

H. gracilis in full bloom. H. x johnsonii all with big buds, H. vittatum with big buds,H. x ackermannii with buds and all popular hybreds either blooming or very close. We had a really cold winter here in Zone 9 so we are a little behind. |
